6 Tips To Beat Holiday Weight Gain

How to maintain your weight and stay healthy during the holidays.

By: Danielle Maiorana

For many people, the holidays are a time to gather with family and friends. Where do most people tend to gather…the table! The common connection between food, holidays and loved ones brings up the internal struggle of wanting to participate in the celebration by enjoying in the food that creates so many fond memories with loved ones versus the feeling of guilt for over-indulging which creates a “food hangover” the next day.

I think we can all agree we’ve been guilty of having the “food hangover” at one point or another in our life. Over the years I have come up with some strategies to combat this battle to allow myself to still enjoy time with family and friends but in moderation. Its’ all about balance!

Here are some of my tried and true tricks/tips I recommend to just about anyone:

1. CONSIDER HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES

  • Try removing the skin from the turkey to cut off part of the fat
  • If you are looking for a healthy snack or appetizers think veggie tray

2. THINK ABOUT YOUR PRE-PARTY MEAL

  • Fill up with some fiber from veggies or a lean protein to avoid all the temptations
  • This will help you avoid making bad choices on the spot

3. STAY HYDRATED

  • Always have a glass of water in hand to avoid temptations
  • Sometimes our mind confuses hunger with thirst so before reaching for something to eat…drink some water

4. USE A SMALLER PLATE

  • Having a smaller plate will make portion control easier
  • Fill your plate first with veggies and good protein to fill you up and curb your appetite

5. TRY YOUR BEST TO AVOID ALCOHOL

  • Alcohol cripples your will power and will also add excess calories to your diet
  • Set a limit and stick to it

6. BEAT STRESS OR BOREDOM WITH HOBBIES OR HEALTHY HABITS

  • Holidays can be chaotic and some of us turn to food for comfort so if you tend to binge or overeat under stress make a list of your favorite activities and hang it up to look at
  • Some examples are crafting, going on a walk, working out or taking a bath

When you combine planning in advance and using some of these tips I have provided it will give you the tools to ensure you are starting off the New Year without a “food hangover.” I have found that planning coupled with accountability and guidance of a Coach that cares is the most effective strategy!
